توضیح دکتر اشرف در مورد بخش فارسی ی ادبیات ایرانیگا

من در سایت شما به حمله‌ی شما به دانشنامه‌ی ایرانیکا برخوردم و برای اطلاع آن را برای آقای دکتر اشرف، مدیرِ ایرانیکا، فرستادم. ایشان در پاسخ نامه ای برای من فرستاده اند که کپی آن را برای شما می‌فرستم. اشتباهاتی که آقای میرعابدینی در آن مقاله دیده اند، چنان که در این نامه اشاره شده است، مربوط به مترجم فارسی مقاله است که ناشیگری کرده و برخی نام‌ها را غلط ضبط کرده است. ترجمه‌ی مقاله هم گویا پخته و پرداخته نیست. آقای میرعابدینی هم به اصل مقاله در سایت ایرانیکا مراجعه نکرده است. من شنیده ام که نوشته‌ی میرعابدینی در باره‌ی ترجمه‌ی آن مقاله نقدِ سنجیده‌ای ست. از آن جا که شما را مرد اصولی می‌شناسم، پیشنهاد می‌کنم برای جبران حمله‌هایی که شما، بر اثر ناآگاهی از اصل مطلب، به ایرانیکا کرده اید، تمامی مقاله‌ی میرعابدینی و این نامه‌ی دکتر اشرف را روی سایت خود بگذارید. به هر حال، ایرانیکا یک کار عظیمِ علمی ست. در چنین کاری ناگزیر خطاهایی هم رخ می‌دهد، اما من بر آن ام که حریمِ ادب را در مورد آن رعایت باید کرد و انتقادها را به زبانِ سازنده می‌باید یادآور شد نه با پرخاش و دشنام.

همان طور که از من خواسته‌اید نامه‌ی شما و آقای دکتر اشرف را این‌جا می‌گذارم. فقط لازم است توضیح بدهم که من زیر همان مطلبی که نوشته‌ام، (همان روز البته‌) اول لینک داده‌ام به تمام مقاله‌ی میرعابدینی، بعد هم آن بخشی را که باهاش کار داشته‌ام کپی کرده‌ام گذاشته‌ام زیر مطلب. یعنی هر کسی که بخواهد تمام مقاله را بخواند، به آن دست‌رسی دارد. دیگر این که من راجع به این ابتداییات با آگاهی‌ی کامل به این ابتداییات می‌نویسم.
استاد عزیز، من از ایرانیکایی حرف زده‌ام که «بهرام حیدری» را «بهرام الهی» نوشته است و «رمان» چهارصد صفحه‌ای چوبک را «داستان کوتاه» نوشته است. و به روشنی نوشته‌ام «از این که نویسندگان این بخش از ایرانیکا یا مترجم آن...» یعنی که استناد کرده‌ام به نوشته‌ای دیگر. و دست آخر هم نوشته‌ام که حتی به نوشته‌ای هم که به آن استناد می‌کنم اعتماد نیست. دلیلش هم به این روشنی است که میرعابدینی همان کسی است که ابتدایی‌ترین اصول فرهنگی را رعایت نکرده است و در مجموعه‌ی داستانی که جمع وجور کرده است به هر کسی که توانسته است دست‌برد زده است، که داستانش را در نسخه‌ای دیگر نوشته‌ام.
استاد عزیز، این ایرانیکایی که من از آن نوشته‌ام اصلا قابل دفاع نیست. این ایرانیکایی که من از آن حرف زده‌ام مثل بیش‌تر کارهای مثلا قرهنگی‌ی این ایرانی جماعت‌هایی است که من می‌بینم، چه توی ایران، چه توی بغداد، آن قدر هشل هف است که آدم، ببخشیدها! انگشت به کون می‌ماند، و ناچار می‌رسد به همان جمله‌های لوس و مزخرف که گفت عمه را می‌شود گایید و گفت ما گاییدیم و دیدیم می‌شود.

Thank you so much for sending me the satirical critique of Sarduzami, who evidently has been deeply hurt by some misspellings and oversights in an unauthorized Persian translation of the articles on Fiction. More than three quarters of the “mistakes”, including Sarduzami's own name, mentioned in Mirabedini's meticulous and most welcomed review are those made in the Persian translation of the original English, a translation that was neither commissioned nor supervised by anyone at the Encyclopaedia Iranica.

If a careful examination of over 80 pages by a well-qualified critic shows only a few typographical oversights in diacritics among over hundreds of Persian names and titles—it is indeed a complement to Yavari and our editors here at the Encyclopaedia. Concerning Mr. Mirabedini's more valuable and objective criticism of the article containing confusion between references to a Novel and Short Story in four cases, once again the confusion is in the translation. Instances where the English has referred to a “story” or “novella” have been translated in the Persian version as “short story” or “novel.”

May I now make two general points about reviewing unauthorized translations and the advantage of being on the web: Any Persian critic knows how hopelessly careless and hasty translations are these days (particularly when done without prior consultation with the original writers). To cite examples to criticize the text without checking against the original is not a responsible way. One doesn't even need to know English well to check the transliteration in the original text, specifically when the original entries are easily and free of charge available on the web. Being on the web means that we can easily correct obvious slips and errors, we are therefore even more grateful for criticism now than we were before when corrigenda would be hidden away at the back of volumes. Now the text itself can be corrected so we are even grateful for the handful of typos that Mirabedini has found and welcome that as a form of co-operation, etc.

As you can see from the fact that we have taken the time to respond to this criticism, we welcome criticisms of any kind, even satirical ones.

I am, therefore, most grateful to you for sending me this critic.
